The Co-operative sector in England was formed upon interest of a few workers and alike the same,
the origin of this society was also caused by a few coolie workers of Karthedom area.
Financial constraints that existed prior to the Second World War caused serious economic problems,
especially when it came to post death needs of common man. Aid from others became inevitable,
to meet the expenses required for cremation/burial of dead. As a solution to this problem
the society was formed.
Prime fund of the Society was the One hundred Rupees collected from a hundred workers,
each of them contributing one rupee each. In the event of death in any of these
member’s family, an aid
of Rs.20/- was provided with immediate effect. While releasing such an aid, a special
contribution of 4 annas each was collected to keep-up the fund and 1 anna was further
decided to be collected every month. In the early days, day to day affairs of the Society
was administered by Chakkalakkal Kakko Master alias Kakko. Members were divided
into each group of ten, and monthly contribution
was collected through
each group leader. These functions were led by Kodiyanthara Bhava and Thengasseri Pappu.
All necessary expenses were able to be met at that time, with the Rs.20/- given as aid to meet
post death expenses. In order to secure the money collected, a box with three locks was built,
and the Secretary, President and Treasurer kept each of its key in their separate custody. The box was kept at
the presbytery of Karthedom St. George Church.
The name of the Society at that time was 'Karthedom St.Joseph Maranavasya Sahaya Sanghom'
and was administered on the written bye-laws prepared under instructions of the then Parish Priest
of Karthedom Church, Late, Rev. Fr. George Kattassery. After many years, aspire of office bearers
to register this as a Society was approved by the General body. This move was spearheaded by
Valiyaveettil Vareeth Master. On the 7th day of December 1938, when this society got registered as a Co-operative
